Green flakes in cream formulation

Question

Could you please review this cream formulation and advise on how to fix the issue where green flakes are appearing in the cream, as shown in the attached image? The formulation is as follows: Base cream 88.7%, Allantoin 0.2%, Tocopheryl Acetate 1%, Walnut Shell Scrub ขนาดเล็ก 1%, Walnut Shell Scrub ขนาดใหญ่ 1%, Kaolin 5%, Olive Oil 1%, Bamboo Charcoal Powder 3%, สารกันเสีย 2g. How can this be fixed? Please advise.

Answer

Based on your formulation and the image, the green flakes are most likely coming from the Olive Oil you used. Extra Virgin Olive Oil contains chlorophyll, which gives it a green color. When mixed with other ingredients, especially powders like Kaolin or Charcoal, or if the emulsion isn't stable, the oil (and its green pigment) can separate or react, appearing as green flakes or streaks.

To fix this:

  • Try replacing the Extra Virgin Olive Oil with a refined olive oil (which has less chlorophyll) or another colorless or pale oil like mineral oil or sunflower oil.
  • Ensure all ingredients are mixed thoroughly and the base cream is compatible with the oils and powders.
