Hair Perfume Formulation: Longevity and Odor Control

Asked by: tuney-toon On: October 21, 2017 Product Type: Cosmetics

Question

I am developing a hair perfume spray using the following formula:

  • Panthenol (Vitamin B5) ExtraLite 1%
  • Creatine 100 1%
  • Distilled Water 20%
  • Fragrance Oil 20%
  • Zinc PCA 1% + L-Carnitine 3%
  • Ethyl Alcohol up to 100%

I would like to know how to make the fragrance last longer and add odor elimination to this formula. Also, will Essential Oil scent last long in this type of product?

Answer

Hair Perfume Formulation Advice

Thank you for sharing your hair perfume formula. It's a good base with beneficial ingredients like Panthenol and Creatine for hair care.

To address your questions about making the fragrance last longer and adding odor elimination:

Improving Fragrance Longevity

Alcohol-based sprays can cause fragrance to evaporate quickly. To make the scent last longer on hair, consider using a fragrance encapsulation service like AromaLock™. This process encapsulates your chosen fragrance into a water-soluble powder that can be added to your formula. Encapsulation helps the fragrance adhere better to the hair and release the scent over a longer period.

Adding Odor Elimination

To add odor-eliminating properties to your hair spray, you can incorporate a suitable deodorizing ingredient. Some options that work well in water-based or alcohol-based formulas include:

  • DeoMax™ Liquid: This ingredient is effective against various odors, including body odor and environmental smells that might cling to hair.
  • SugarClean™: Derived from sugarcane extract, this deodorizer is effective against a wide range of odors, including hair odor and cigarette smell.

Add the recommended usage rate of either DeoMax™ Liquid or SugarClean™ to your formula. Be aware that some deodorizers, like Odor-Kill™, are not suitable for perfumed products as they can absorb the fragrance itself.

Essential Oils vs. Fragrance Oils for Longevity

The longevity of a scent, whether from essential oils or fragrance oils, depends heavily on the specific components in the blend. Some essential oils are very volatile and evaporate quickly, while others are less so. Similarly, fragrance oils are blends where longevity can vary. Using a fragrance encapsulation method like AromaLock™ is generally the most effective way to significantly improve the lasting power of any fragrance on hair, regardless of whether it's an essential oil blend or a fragrance oil.

By incorporating fragrance encapsulation and a suitable deodorizer, you can create a hair spray that not only smells great but also helps keep hair smelling fresh.
