Question

I need a formula for a hair treatment cream. I want to include Creatine and Silicone Hi-Cond (Aminopropyl Dimethicone). How can I add oil, specifically Fractionated Coconut Oil, at around 10% to the formula without it separating? Please provide a sample formula and instructions.

Answer

Here is a suggested formula for a hair treatment cream based on the ingredients discussed, including Creatine (which may be what you refer to as keratin in this context) and Silicone Hi-Cond.

Hair Treatment Cream Formula

  • Water (Distilled Water): q.s. to 100% (approx. 71%)
  • Cetearyl Alcohol: 10%
  • Cyclomethicone: 5%
  • Glycerin: 5%
  • Cetrimonium Chloride: 1%
  • Silicone Hi-Cond (Aminopropyl Dimethicone): 5%
  • Hydroxyethylcellulose: 1%
  • Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5): 0.5-1% (suggested 1%)
  • Creatine: 1%
  • Preservative (e.g., Phenoxyethanol SA or Mild Preserved Eco): 1%
  • Citric Acid: Adjust pH to 5-6

Instructions:

  1. Combine the water phase ingredients (Water, Glycerin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Panthenol, Creatine). Heat if necessary to dissolve solids.
  2. Combine the oil phase ingredients (Cetearyl Alcohol, Cyclomethicone, Silicone Hi-Cond, Cetrimonium Chloride). Heat if necessary to melt solids.
  3. Slowly add the oil phase to the water phase while stirring or homogenizing until a cream is formed.
  4. Add the preservative and mix well.
  5. Adjust the pH to 5-6 using Citric Acid solution.
  6. Add fragrance if desired.

Please note that this formula is a guideline, and adjustments may be needed based on desired texture and performance.
