Question

I made a cream formulation, and after about one month of use, it has changed significantly in color, becoming much darker. The cream was stored in an opaque jar at room temperature (not refrigerated).

The formula is as follows (50ml):

  • B3: 1.5%
  • 4MSK: 1%
  • Gluco Bright: 2%
  • Zinc PCA: 0.5%
  • Tranexamic Acid: 1.5%
  • Plankton GP4G: 1%
  • Rice Vitamin: 1%
  • L-Carnitine: 1%
  • L-Carnosine: 0.2%
  • Laurocapram: 1%
  • 1,2-Hexanediol: 1.5%
  • Licorice Extract (1%): 0.5%
  • Calendula Extract: 2%
  • Fruit Peel: 1.5%
  • beta glucan: 2.5%
  • Yeast Radiance: 1%
  • Light Cream Maker: 1.2%
  • Base water: Rose Petal Water

I did not add any preservative to the formula.

I would like to know if the cream's color change is due to a specific ingredient or because I did not include a preservative.

Additionally, could you please tell me when Beta Glucan will be back in stock?

Answer

Cream Color Change Explanation

The change in color of your cream after about one month is likely due to the instability of some ingredients in the formula and the absence of a preservative system, compounded by storage at room temperature.

Several ingredients in your formula, particularly the natural extracts such as Licorice Extract, Calendula Extract, Fruit Peel, Yeast Radiance, and Plankton Artemia Extract, have natural colors and can be prone to oxidation or degradation over time, especially when not stored under optimal conditions or without proper preservation.

While some ingredients like Yeast Radiance, Plankton Artemia Extract, and Rose Petal Water may contain preservatives from the manufacturer, the overall formula requires a comprehensive preservative system to prevent microbial growth and maintain stability when mixed together. The lack of added preservatives makes the cream susceptible to contamination, which can lead to discoloration, changes in texture, and potential safety issues.

Additionally, many of the ingredients, including Licorice Extract, Yeast Radiance, Rose Petal Water, Rice Vitamin, and Calendula Extract, are recommended to be stored in the refrigerator for long-term stability. Storing the cream at room temperature can accelerate the degradation process of these sensitive components.

To prevent color changes and ensure the safety and stability of your homemade cream, it is highly recommended to:

  • Include a suitable broad-spectrum preservative system in your formula.
  • Store the finished product in a cool environment, preferably in the refrigerator, especially considering the presence of several ingredients that require refrigeration for optimal shelf life.
