Hot Process Formulation with Differing Melting Point Ingredients
Question
I am working on a hot process formulation and have two ingredients in the oil phase that require different melting temperatures. For example, when combining LC Cream Maker™ and Shea Butter (Ultra Soft):
- One ingredient requires a temperature below 50°C for melting.
- The other requires 70-80°C.
How should these ingredients be combined, and at what temperature should the mixing occur to ensure a stable formulation?
Answer
When performing a Hot Process formulation with ingredients in the oil phase that require different melting temperatures, such as Shea Butter (Ultra Soft) and LC Cream Maker™ (which is typically added to the water phase), here's how to approach it:
LC Cream Maker™
LC Cream Maker™ is an oil-in-water emulsifier that creates a Liquid Crystal structure. It is recommended for use at 75-85 degrees Celsius and is generally added to the heated water phase.
Shea Butter (Ultra Soft)
Shea Butter (Ultra Soft) should be mixed into the oil phase by heating it to 60-70 degrees Celsius until it melts into an oil.
Method for combining ingredients with different temperature requirements:
- Separate Phases: Divide your ingredients into a Water Phase and an Oil Phase.
- Heat Water Phase: Heat the Water Phase, along with the LC Cream Maker™, to 75-80 degrees Celsius and blend until it is well mixed (it will appear like a milky white lotion).
- Heat Oil Phase: Heat the Oil Phase, which contains Shea Butter (Ultra Soft), to 75-80 degrees Celsius as well. Although Shea Butter melts at a lower temperature, maintaining the Oil Phase at the same temperature as the Water Phase ensures efficient emulsification and a stable cream texture.
- Combine Phases: Gradually add the heated Oil Phase (75-80 degrees Celsius) into the heated Water Phase (75-80 degrees Celsius) while continuously stirring at a speed of at least 1000 rpm.
- Cool Down: Continue stirring at a low speed until the formulation cools down to no more than 40 degrees Celsius. Then, add any heat-sensitive ingredients and continue blending until fully incorporated.
This method ensures that all ingredients are properly melted and combined at the optimal temperature for creating a stable emulsion.
