How to make Cleansing Gel from Aloe Vera base?
Question
Based on the ingredients I have, can I use a ready-made Aloe Vera Gel base to make a cleansing gel? I have Natural moisture amino acid and Tomato extract. How should I formulate it?
Answer
How to Make Cleansing Gel
Making a Cleansing Gel by using Aloe Vera Gel (Base) directly as the main base is not possible. The primary function of a Cleansing Gel is to clean the skin, which requires cleansing agents (Surfactants) as the main component. Aloe Vera Gel's main properties are soothing and moisturizing, but it does not have the ability to clean dirt or makeup.
Therefore, if you want to make a Cleansing Gel, you need to create a new cleansing gel base with the following main components:
Surfactants: This is the most important component responsible for removing dirt, oil, and makeup. It is recommended to choose gentle surfactants, such as กลุ่ม Amino Acid Based Surfactants
- Examples of usable surfactants include Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate or Sodium Lauroyl Glycinate / Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate, which are amino acid-derived surfactants that are gentle and provide good foam.
Thickener/Gelling Agent: To give the product a viscous, gel texture.
- Examples of gelling agents used in cleansing products include ClearClean™ or ThickClean™, which are Acrylates Crosspolymer types that help create a clear and appropriately viscous gel texture.
Water: The main solvent in the formulation.
Other Nourishing Ingredients (Optional): Nourishing ingredients like the Natural moisture amino acid and Tomato extract you have can be added in small amounts to enhance properties. However, since this is a wash-off product, these ingredients will only be in contact with the skin for a short time, so their benefits are limited.
Preservative: Essential to include to prevent microbial growth in water-based formulations.
General Method for Making Cleansing Gel
- Prepare the water phase and optionally mix in water-soluble nourishing ingredients like Natural moisture amino acid and Tomato extract.
- Gradually add the surfactants to the water phase and stir until well combined.
- Add the thickener and stir until the desired gel texture is achieved (some types may require pH adjustment to thicken).
- Adjust the pH of the formula to be suitable for the skin (generally around pH 5.5) and compatible with the thickener and preservative.
- Add the preservative and any remaining ingredients. Stir to combine.
Caution: Ready-made Aloe Vera Gel bases often already have a gel texture and preservative. Mixing them directly with surfactants might destabilize the original gel structure. It is recommended to start by creating a new formula using water, appropriate surfactants, and a gelling agent.
