How to Thicken Absolue Soft Cream Base After Mixing (Post-Adjustment Viscosity)

Question

I am using the Absolue Soft Cream Base (ID 10458) for my formulation. After mixing in additional ingredients, the resulting cream consistency is much too liquid.

What ingredients should I add to increase the viscosity and fix this issue?

Answer

The issue of your cream becoming too liquid after mixing is common and usually happens when added ingredients (like extracts, high-salt solutions, or low-pH actives) disrupt the emulsion system of the Absolue Soft Cream Base (ID 10458) or simply dilute it too much.

To easily thicken the cream without re-heating, you should use a Cold Process Thickener (a thickener that works at room temperature).

Recommended Thickeners for Post-Adjustment

  1. Liquid Polymeric Thickeners (Recommended Easiest Fix):

    • Examples: Products similar to Aristoflex AVC, Sepigel 305, or other Acrylates Copolymer liquids.
    • Why: These are pre-neutralized and highly effective. They swell immediately upon contact with water, making them ideal for adjusting viscosity in a finished product.
    • How to Use: Add the liquid thickener drop by drop while stirring continuously (preferably with a high-shear mixer or stick blender for a few seconds) until the desired consistency is reached. Typical usage is very low, often between 0.1% to 1.0%.
  2. Xanthan Gum:

    • Why: A natural gum that is very effective.
    • How to Use: To prevent clumping, you must first disperse the Xanthan Gum powder in a small amount of glycerin or a light oil (like Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride) to form a slurry. Then, slowly add this slurry to your cream while stirring. Use at a concentration of 0.1% to 0.5%.

Important Note: Always add the thickener slowly and check the consistency frequently. Over-thickening can make the cream feel sticky or rubbery. Start with the liquid polymeric thickener for the quickest and easiest adjustment.
