How to Use Witch Hazel for Oily Skin

Question

I have Witch Hazel and want to know how to use it in my skincare routine.

My skin is oily, and my current routine (cleanser, BHA, Vitamin C, Vitamin B3, and purchased sunscreen) has improved my skin (less oily, fewer breakouts, smoother texture) but it's still oily (possibly from sunscreen).

Could you suggest ways or formulations to incorporate Witch Hazel?

Answer

How to Use Witch Hazel in Your Skincare Routine

You have Witch Hazel and are looking for ways to incorporate it into your routine, especially for oily skin. Witch Hazel is an excellent ingredient for this skin type, known for its astringent properties that help tighten pores and control excess oil.

Based on your current successful routine (cleanser, BHA, Vitamin C, Vitamin B3, sunscreen), adding Witch Hazel can further help manage oiliness and improve skin texture.

Here are a few ways you can use Witch Hazel:

  1. As a Simple Toner: This is the most common way to use Witch Hazel. You can use it directly on a cotton pad and gently swipe over your face after cleansing. This helps remove any remaining impurities and tightens pores.

  2. In a DIY Toner Formulation: You can create a simple toner by mixing Witch Hazel with other beneficial water-soluble ingredients. A basic recipe could be:

    • Witch Hazel (Distillate - Alcohol Free, Paraben Free) or Witch Hazel (Alcohol Free, Paraben Free) Plus Allantoin: 90-95%
    • Glycerin (optional, for added hydration): 1-3%
    • Preservative (e.g., Mild Preserved Eco): 1%

Simply mix the ingredients together at room temperature. This allows you to customize the toner slightly while still getting the primary benefits of Witch Hazel.

  3. In Other Water-Based Products: You can incorporate Witch Hazel into other water-based formulations like serums or mists, ensuring the total concentration is appropriate for your desired effect (typically 10-100% in toners, lower in other products).

Given your skin is already improving with your current routine, starting with Witch Hazel as a simple toner or in a basic DIY toner formulation would be a good approach. It complements the oil-controlling and skin-improving effects of BHA, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B3.

Remember to patch test any new product or formulation before applying it to your entire face.
