Improving Glossiness in Lip Butter Formulation
Question
Hello team,
I recently purchased ingredients from myskinrecipe to experiment with a lip butter formulation based on a sample image. However, the texture of the lip butter is good, but the glossiness is not satisfactory compared to the sample. I would like to ask for advice on what ingredients I should add to achieve the desired glossiness.
The formula I have tested is as follows:
- Water Balm 5%
- Microcrystalline Wax 20%
- sheabutter 5%
- white oil 5%
- Bee wax 15%
- Sweet Almond Oil 10%
- Coconut Oil 10%
- Jojoba Oil 10%
- water 3%
- Mild Preserved Eco 0.5%
- Glycerin 4%
- Glyceryl glucoside 1%
- Panthenol 2%
- lipid soft 1%
Total: 91.5% (Note: The percentages provided sum to 91.5%, not 100%.)
Could you please advise on which ingredients to add to increase the glossiness of this lip butter formulation?
Answer
Improving Gloss in Your Lip Butter
Based on your current lip butter formula, to achieve a higher gloss similar to your example, you can incorporate ingredients specifically designed to enhance shine in lip products. Your current formula has a good base of waxes and oils, but adding a dedicated gloss agent will significantly improve the shine.
Here are some ingredients you can consider adding to your formula:
- LipidSoft™ Shine: This is an ultra-glossy ester that is excellent for adding shine to lipsticks and other lip products. It is oil-soluble and can be easily incorporated into your existing oil phase.
- Glossy Wax (Light, Non-Greasiness): This liquid oil wax is specifically used in lip products to provide shine without feeling overly greasy. It can be used to replace some of the other oils or waxes in your formula.
- Polyglyceryl-2 isostearate/dimer dilinoleate copolymer (Standard Gloss or Extra Gloss): These polymers are key components in lip gloss formulations, known for providing high shine and good adherence to the lips. They are viscous oils that can contribute significantly to the glossy finish.
- Silicone Gel (High Gloss, Dimethicone Base): This silicone gel is suitable for adding luster and shine to makeup formulas, including lip products. It can help improve the texture and spreadability while providing a glossy look.
To incorporate these ingredients, you may need to adjust the percentages of the other oils and waxes in your formula to maintain the desired texture and total percentage. Start with a small percentage of the chosen gloss agent and gradually increase it until you achieve the desired level of shine.
For example, you could try replacing a portion of your existing oils (like Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, or Jojoba Oil) or even some of the waxes with one of the recommended gloss-enhancing ingredients.
Experimenting with different percentages and combinations of these gloss agents will help you find the perfect balance for your lip butter to achieve the desired glossy finish while keeping the texture you like.
