Increasing Foam and Mildness in Soap Base for Children

คำถาม

I have a soap base formulation containing Cocamidopropyl Betaine as a foaming agent at 24% of a 1kg base, but it produces very little foam. To achieve significantly more foam that is also suitable for children, which ingredient should I add between AminoWash™ (Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate) and Mild-Wash L™ (Sodium Lauroamphoacetate)? If I add one of these, should I reduce the amount of Cocamidopropyl Betaine and increase the new ingredient by how much? Or should I remove Cocamidopropyl Betaine completely and replace it with the new ingredient?

Increasing Foam in Soap Base

It sounds like you're looking to boost the foam in your soap base, which currently contains 24% Cocamidopropyl Betaine. While Cocamidopropyl Betaine is a gentle co-surfactant that contributes to a fine, smooth foam and mildness, using it as the primary or sole foaming agent at a high concentration might not always yield the abundant foam you desire, depending on the overall formulation of the base.

To achieve more foam, especially a richer, creamier lather, and ensure suitability for children, both AminoWash™ (Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate) and Mild-Wash L™ (Sodium Lauroamphoacetate) are excellent choices.

  • AminoWash™ (Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate): This is a very gentle anionic surfactant derived from amino acids. It is known for creating a delicate, creamy foam and is highly recommended for use in facial cleansers and baby products. It is described as providing some of the best foaming among amino acid-derived surfactants and is suggested for use with other surfactants like Mild-Wash L™ to enhance foam volume and stability.
  • Mild-Wash L™ (Sodium Lauroamphoacetate): This is an extra gentle amphoteric surfactant, similar in class to Cocamidopropyl Betaine but often considered even milder. It is also widely used in gentle cleansing products, including baby washes. It is compatible with all other types of surfactants and contributes to the overall mildness and lather of a formulation.

Recommendation:

For significantly increased foam, AminoWash™ is likely the better primary choice due to its inherent foaming properties and creamy lather. It is also very gentle and suitable for children.

Combining AminoWash™ with Mild-Wash L™ is an excellent strategy. Mild-Wash L™ will add further mildness and help create a more stable, rich foam when used alongside AminoWash™.

Adjusting Concentrations:

Instead of solely relying on Cocamidopropyl Betaine, you should reduce its concentration and incorporate AminoWash™ and/or Mild-Wash L™. The exact percentages will require some experimentation based on your specific soap base and desired foam level, but here's a general approach:

  1. Reduce Cocamidopropyl Betaine: Lower the amount of Cocamidopropyl Betaine from 24% to a lower percentage, perhaps in the range of 5-10%. It will still contribute mildness and foam quality.
  2. Add AminoWash™: Incorporate AminoWash™ at a concentration typically between 10-15% (its recommended usage is 5-25%). This will be your primary foam booster.
  3. Add Mild-Wash L™ (Optional but Recommended): Add Mild-Wash L™ at a concentration of around 3-5% (its recommended usage is 1-20%, or 3-5% when combined with others). This will enhance the foam and mildness.

For example, you could try a combination like:

  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine: 5-10%
  • AminoWash™: 10-15%
  • Mild-Wash L™: 3-5%

  • (Note: These are example ranges for the added surfactants within your 1kg base. The total percentage of surfactants in your final base will increase, leading to more foam.)*

Important Considerations:

  • pH Adjustment: Mild-Wash L™ is alkaline and will require you to adjust the final pH of your soap base down to the skin-friendly range of 5-6 using an acid like Citric Acid or Lactic Acid. AminoWash™ is typically already in this range.
  • Experimentation: Start with lower percentages of the new surfactants and gradually increase them in small test batches of your base until you achieve the desired foam and feel.

By incorporating AminoWash™ and potentially Mild-Wash L™ while reducing Cocamidopropyl Betaine, you should be able to achieve a significantly richer and more abundant foam that is also gentle enough for children.
