Ingredients and Method for Making Clay Powder (แป้งดินน้ำมัน)

Clay powder, or "แป้งดินน้ำมัน" in Thai cosmetics, is created by combining a high proportion of powder base with colors and a Water-in-Oil cream base.

Key Ingredients:

• Powder Base: This typically includes fine powders such as Talc Powder, Mica Powder, and Sericite Powder. These powders provide the bulk and texture of the product.
• Colors: Pigments like Iron Oxides (such as Beige, Yellow, and Red Iron Oxides EasyMix) are used to give the desired color.
• Cream Base: A Water-in-Oil (W/O) emulsion base is essential. Examples include Water-in-Oil EZ and Water-in-Oil Max. This base provides the creamy, putty-like consistency and helps the powders and colors blend smoothly and adhere to the skin.

Method:

The process involves mixing the powder base (Talc, Mica, Sericite) and colors (Iron Oxides) into the Water-in-Oil cream base. You can mix the powders and colors together first to create a colored powder base, and then incorporate this into the cream base, or mix all ingredients simultaneously in the cream base.

When preparing the Water-in-Oil cream base, it is crucial to gradually add the water phase into the oil phase while continuously stirring or blending until a homogeneous emulsion is formed. Once the cream base is ready, the powder and color mixture is added and thoroughly blended until a smooth, consistent "clay powder" texture is achieved.

This type of formulation provides good coverage, adherence, and often water resistance due to the external oil phase of the emulsion.
