L-Ascorbic Acid Stability for Body Whitening & Facial Serum Review
Question
I am interested in using L-Ascorbic Acid for body whitening. I previously tried a body lotion with Alpha Arbutin, Vitamin B3, and Glucosamine (N-acetyl-D) but was not fully satisfied, so I want to add Vitamin C.
My questions are:
- If I mix 15% L-ascorbic acid powder with water to use as a body toner, how long will it last before degrading? Should I stop using it when it turns yellow?
- Can I mix L-ascorbic acid powder directly into pure body lotion and apply it?
Additionally, I would like to share the formula and results of a facial serum I mixed myself and have been using for almost a month with very satisfactory results (brighter, more lively, less tired, healthier, bouncier skin):
- Glucosamine (N-acetyl-D) 4%
- Alpha Arbutin 2%
- Licorice Root Extract (Licochalcone A) 1%
- Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) 5%
- Matrixyl™ 3000 8%
- Apple Stem Cell Extract 5%
- Allantoin 0.2-0.5%
- Repair Activator 10%
- Zinc PCA 1%
Could you please advise on the best way to achieve body whitening with Vitamin C, considering stability, and comment on the effectiveness of my facial serum formula?
Answer
Using Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) for Body Skin and Facial Serum Review
Using Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) Mixed with Water or Lotion for Body
Regarding the staff's suggestion about mixing 15% L-ascorbic acid with water for use as a body toner, this can be done. However, the exact shelf life cannot be specified in terms of days as it depends on environmental factors such as light, temperature, and air exposure.
- Observing Degradation: Observe the color change. If the solution starts turning slightly yellow, it indicates that the Vitamin C is beginning to degrade. Its effectiveness will gradually decrease as the yellow color deepens. While you can still use it, its efficacy will not be the same as when freshly made.
- Mixing with Body Lotion: Mixing L-ascorbic acid powder directly into your body lotion is also possible. However, the instability property of L-ascorbic acid when dissolved in a water-based vehicle remains, similar to mixing with plain water. Therefore, if you mix it, it should also be used up relatively quickly.
Options for Stability for Long-Term Use
Since L-ascorbic acid is highly unstable when dissolved in water, which is a main component of lotion, if you wish to incorporate Vitamin C into a body lotion for long-term use over several weeks, the staff recommends considering more stable forms of Vitamin C, such as:
- Ascorbyl Glucoside (AA-2G): This is a highly stable form of Vitamin C that is water-soluble and is converted to L-ascorbic acid upon absorption into the skin. It is effective for long-term skin brightening and reducing dark spots.
- Formula Vitamin C E Ferulic: This formula uses L-ascorbic acid as the main component but is enhanced with Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid to help stabilize the L-ascorbic acid, making the formula more stable.
Choosing a stable form of Vitamin C will help the product you mix have a longer shelf life and maintain its effectiveness better than using L-ascorbic acid powder mixed directly into a water-based vehicle.
