Layering Multiple Serums (Vitamin C, BHA, B3+NAG, Hydrating)

Question

I am making several serums based on shop recipes, including:

  • A Vitamin C serum (likely the Skinceuticals C E Ferulic type) from which I omitted Hyaluronic Acid
  • A BHA serum
  • A B3+NAG serum
  • A hydrating serum containing Hyaluronic Acid, PCA 50%, and Urea

I want to know if I can use these serums together in my skincare routine, and what is the recommended order of application?

Answer

Using Multiple Serums Together

You can use serums containing BHA, B3+NAG, Vitamin C, and a hydrating blend of Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium PCA, and Urea. However, it's generally recommended to apply them as separate serums rather than combining all ingredients into a single formula, especially for active ingredients like BHA and Vitamin C which require specific pH levels for stability and efficacy.

  • B3 + NAG + HYA + PCA + Urea: Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) work well together and can be combined in one serum. Adding Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium PCA, and Urea to this blend is also suitable as they are all excellent moisturizing ingredients that complement each other to boost skin hydration.
  • Vitamin C: If you are using a pure L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C formula (like the Skinceuticals C E Ferulic type mentioned), it should be formulated separately. While it shouldn't be mixed directly with other actives in the same bottle, it can be layered in your routine. Adding Hyaluronic Acid to the Vitamin C serum can help improve its texture.
  • BHA: Salicylic Acid (BHA) is an exfoliant and should also be formulated separately.

Recommended Application Order

When layering multiple serums, it's a good practice to apply them from thinnest to thickest consistency and allow each layer to absorb for a few minutes (around 5-10 minutes) before applying the next. This is particularly important when using acidic products like BHA and Vitamin C to ensure optimal penetration and reduce potential irritation.

A possible routine could be:

  • Nighttime Routine:

    1. Cleanse your face.
    2. Apply the BHA serum. Wait 5-10 minutes for it to absorb.
    3. Apply the serum containing Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG), Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium PCA, and Urea.
    4. Follow with your moisturizer if needed.
  • Daytime Routine:

    1. Cleanse your face.
    2. Apply the Vitamin C serum. Wait 5-10 minutes for it to absorb.
    3. Apply the serum containing Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG), Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium PCA, and Urea.
    4. Finish with sunscreen.

Using too many products at once can sometimes overwhelm the skin. If you find this routine too much, you could alternate serums or use certain serums only on specific days or areas of your face. For example, you could use BHA and the hydrating serum at night, and Vitamin C and the hydrating serum in the morning.

Remember to always patch test new formulations and introduce them gradually into your routine to see how your skin reacts.
