Question

How can I create a lightweight, serum-like sunscreen formulation?

Can I mix SPF Protect Ultra™ with Silky Serum Base for this purpose? If not, what alternative formulation would you recommend for a lightweight, fast-absorbing sunscreen?

Answer

Lightweight, Serum-Like Sunscreen Formulation

To achieve a lightweight, fast-absorbing sunscreen texture similar to a serum, chemical sunscreens are generally more suitable than physical sunscreens.

Regarding your question about mixing SPF Protect Ultra™ with Silky Serum Base, this is not possible because Silky Serum Base is not designed to incorporate oil-based ingredients like SPF Protect Ultra™.

As the staff advised, for a lightweight, serum-like sunscreen, you can use SPF Protect Plus (which is a blend of chemical sunscreens) in a compatible base. Silky Serum Base is not compatible.

The staff provided a simple example formulation for a lightweight, smooth sunscreen (approximately SPF 20 PA+++) using compatible ingredients:

  • SPF Protect Plus 20%
  • Pro Polymer 1%
  • Cyclomethicone 10%
  • SiliSilk 5%
  • Water (remaining percentage)

In this formula:

  • SPF Protect Plus provides broad-spectrum UV protection.
  • Pro Polymer acts as a gel maker and thickener.
  • Cyclomethicone is a lightweight silicone that provides a non-sticky, silky feel and helps with spreadability.
  • SiliSilk is a silicone powder that enhances the soft and smooth texture.

This combination of ingredients allows for a lightweight texture that absorbs quickly, unlike formulations based on physical sunscreens or incompatible bases like Silky Serum Base for oil-soluble sunscreens.
