Question

Hello,

I would like to inquire about liquid soap ingredients.

Currently, I am making liquid soap using N70 as the soap base, but my skin still feels slippery every time I shower.

I would like to ask if there are any recommended formulas or soap bases for making liquid soap that provide the best cleansing and leave the skin feeling non-slippery after showering?

Answer

Recommended Liquid Soap Ingredients

Hello! I understand that the slippery feeling after showering with certain soap bases can be uncomfortable. N70 (Sodium Laureth Sulfate or SLES) is an effective surfactant that produces a lot of foam, but sometimes it can leave a coated feeling on the skin.

For making liquid soap that focuses on good cleansing without leaving a slippery feel, there are several soap bases or ingredients you can consider:

Recommended Liquid Soap Bases/Ingredients

  • Sulfate-Free Foaming Base (pH 6, Clear, Foaming): This liquid soap base is developed to provide a clean feel, leaving no slippery or sticky residue after rinsing. It is also gentle on the skin and easy to mix with water and other ingredients. It's a good option if you want a ready-to-use base that specifically addresses the desired after-feel.
  • Clarify-Wash™ Powder (Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate): This surfactant has very high cleansing and foaming efficiency. It is suitable for formulas that require excellent removal of dirt, which typically results in a non-slippery feel. However, this ingredient is stronger than N70 and has a high pH (8-11), so it is necessary to adjust the formula's pH to the 5-6 range for skin gentleness. It should also be used in appropriate amounts.
  • Group of Amino Acid Derived Surfactants (e.g., Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, IseFoam™ - Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate): This group of ingredients is very gentle, provides good foam, and often leaves the skin feeling clean after rinsing. They can be used alone or combined with other surfactants to improve the formula's properties.

Additional Tips:

  • Using primarily anionic surfactants (negatively charged) often results in a cleaner skin feel compared to other types.
  • The feeling after showering also depends on other ingredients in the formula. Adding too many emollients or conditioning agents, for example, can leave a coated feeling on the skin.
  • Water hardness also affects the after-shower feel. Hard water can cause some soaps to leave residue or feel less clean.

If you prioritize convenience and directly addressing the non-slippery feel, I recommend starting with Sulfate-Free Foaming Base as a starting point. Or, if you need a formula with stronger cleansing power, you might consider Clarify-Wash™ Powder, being careful with pH adjustment and usage concentration.
