Lotion feels oily and doesn't absorb well

Question

I have made a lotion formulation that has a good texture, but it feels too oily on the skin and doesn't absorb well. It feels like it's not sinking into the skin and I want it to feel more comfortable.

Based on my formula which includes:

  • Avocado oil (10%)
  • Grape seed oil (10%)
  • PE-1 Aqua
  • MSH White Absorb
  • And potentially Light Cream Maker / Pro Polymer

What is causing this oily feeling and poor absorption, and how can I adjust the formula to make it lighter and absorb better?

Answer

Hello!

Regarding the formula you provided and the issue of the lotion feeling oily and not absorbing well, this is likely due to the relatively high amount of oils in the formula (Avocado oil 10% and Grape seed oil 10%, totaling 20%). This can result in a heavy feel and poor absorption, especially if you are aiming for a light and comfortable lotion texture.

Suggestions for adjusting the formula for a lighter, more easily absorbed texture:

  1. Reduce Oil Content: It is recommended to reduce the total amount of Avocado oil and Grape seed oil. You could try reducing the combined percentage to around 10-15% initially and see how the texture and skin feel are. If it still feels too heavy, you can reduce it further.
  2. Consider Previous Staff Advice:
    • PE-1 Aqua vs MSH White Absorb: As the staff previously advised, PE-1 Aqua helps deliver water-soluble ingredients, while MSH White Absorb is oil-soluble. Using PE-1 Aqua might reduce the absorption of MSH White Absorb. You should consider using only one or adjust the formula based on which ingredient's delivery you want to prioritize.
    • Preservative: The formula is missing a preservative, which is essential to prevent spoilage and ensure the product is safe to use.
    • Thickener/Emulsifier (Light Cream Maker / Pro Polymer): If, after adjusting the oils, the texture is still not as desired or feels too thin, you can consider increasing Light Cream Maker or using Pro Polymer in combination, as previously suggested by the staff, to help adjust the viscosity and texture for better stability and feel.

Reducing the oil content will help make the lotion lighter and absorb better. The remaining percentage after adjusting the ingredients can be filled with distilled water to reach the desired total weight of 200 grams.
