Making Clear Amino Soap Bar from Opaque Glycerin Base

Asked by: nudeeporn.n On: March 19, 2018 Product Type: Cosmetics

Question

I currently make opaque glycerin soap base. I want to make a clear amino soap bar without using oil. How should I adjust the formula?

My current formula is:

1. Lye 13%
2. Coconut Oil, 76Deg 3.75%
3. Palm Kernel Oil 3.75%
4. Lauric acid 6.25%
5. stearic acid 12.5%
6. Cocamidopropyl Butain 16.67%
7. Propylene Glycol 27%
8. Sorbitol 14%

Thank you.

Answer

To achieve a clear amino soap bar without using traditional oils, your current recipe, which relies on the saponification of Coconut Oil, Palm Kernel Oil, Lauric acid, and Stearic acid, will not yield a clear product. Saponified oils and fatty acids inherently create an opaque soap.

To achieve a clear amino soap bar, you need to use different types of cleansing agents, specifically amino acid-based surfactants, which are known for their mildness and ability to create clear formulations.

Instead of modifying your existing recipe, you would need to formulate a new recipe using these types of surfactants. Some examples of amino acid-based surfactants suitable for gentle cleansing products include:

  • AminoWash™ (Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate): This is an anionic surfactant derived from amino acids and fatty acids, known for being gentle, creating a delicate foam, and suitable for clear formulas.
  • Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate: Another amino acid-derived surfactant that provides moisturizing properties and good lather.
  • Sodium Lauroyl Glycinate: A highly gentle amino acid-based detergent that gives good lather.
  • Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate: A highly gentle amino acid-based detergent available in solid form, also providing good foaming.

These surfactants, when combined with appropriate humectants (like Glycerin and Propylene Glycol, which are in your current recipe but might need different proportions) and potentially other co-surfactants and clarifying agents, can form a clear soap base.

Alternatively, a simpler approach would be to use a pre-made clear amino acid-based soap base. Products like Clear Soap Bar (Amino Acids Based, pH 5-6, Soap-Free) are specifically designed to be clear, gentle, and can be melted and re-poured into desired shapes, offering a convenient way to create clear amino soap bars without starting from scratch with individual surfactants. This type of base is "soap-free" in the sense that it doesn't rely on the traditional saponification of fats and alkalis.

In summary, to make a clear amino soap bar, you cannot simply adjust your current opaque soap recipe. You need to use a formulation based on amino acid-derived surfactants or utilize a ready-made clear amino acid-based soap base.
