Making Long-Lasting Hair Perfume Spray
Question
I want to make a long-lasting hair perfume spray. I've read online that you can just mix distilled water and fragrance oil. Is this possible? Is it different from body perfume? Should I use other ingredients?
Answer
Making a Long-Lasting Hair Perfume Spray
Mixing just distilled water and fragrance oil is not sufficient for creating a stable and effective hair perfume spray. Fragrance oils are not soluble in water, which means they will separate over time, leading to an uneven scent and poor longevity.
Hair perfume sprays are different from body perfumes. Body perfumes often use alcohol as a solvent to dissolve the fragrance and help it evaporate quickly to project the scent. Hair perfume sprays typically use a water base and require specific ingredients to properly incorporate the fragrance and provide additional benefits like a soft feel on the hair.
To make a proper hair perfume spray that is stable, smells good, is long-lasting, and provides a soft feel without being sticky, you would need additional ingredients:
- Solubilizer: This is crucial for dispersing the fragrance oil evenly in the water base. An example is Flora Solve™ Clear (Fragrance Solubilizer), which helps create a clear, stable solution without alcohol.
- Conditioning Agent: To provide a soft and smooth feel on the hair. Poly-Conditioner Pro (400 mPa.s) is an example of a conditioning ingredient suitable for water-based hair products.
- Preservative: Essential for any water-based product to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Mild Preserved™ COS (pH 2-8, Broad Spectrum, No-Odor) is a suitable broad-spectrum preservative.
- Fragrance Oil: Your desired scent, such as Neroli Fragrance Oil.
- Distilled Water: The main base of the spray.
By using these components together, you can create a stable emulsion or solution where the fragrance is properly dispersed, the spray feels good on the hair, and the product is safe to use.
