Making Reed Diffusers: Oil, Base, and Ratio

To make a reed diffuser, you need two main components: a fragrance oil (which can be a pure essential oil or a synthetic fragrance) and a reed diffuser base liquid.

The reed diffuser base acts as a carrier for the fragrance, dissolving the oil and allowing it to travel up the reeds to disperse the scent into the air. A good base helps the scent spread effectively without leaving residue in the bottle.

You can choose between two types of fragrance oils:

• Essential Oil: These are natural oils extracted from plants, offering the characteristic scent of the plant.
• Fragrance Oil: These are compounded scents, which may mimic natural scents or be unique blends. They are often more affordable and come in a wider variety of scents.

The key is to choose a good quality reed diffuser base. For example, Reed Diffuser Base (Type 1) is free from Dipropylene Glycol (DPG), Propylene Glycol, and Alcohol, making it safe and non-staining.

Typical Mixing Ratio:
Generally, you would use about 70-75% base mixed with 25-30% fragrance oil. However, this ratio can be adjusted depending on the specific fragrance oil and the desired scent intensity.

Recommendations:

• Choose a fragrance oil whose scent you enjoy and is suitable for use in enclosed spaces.
• Use a dedicated reed diffuser base. Avoid using other carrier oils like vegetable oils, as they are too viscous and won't wick properly up the reeds.
• If using essential oils, ensure they are suitable for home fragrance applications.

Examples of fragrance oils that can be used include Jasmine Fragrance Oil, Neroli Fragrance Oil, Sweet Basil Oil, and Olibanum (Frankincense) Oil.
