Question
I am looking for a detailed method to encapsulate oil using silica, specifically to transform it into a powder form. Could you provide guidance on the process and suitable materials?
Answer
Method for Encapsulating Oil with Silica into Powder Form
To encapsulate oil with silica into a powder form, we recommend using our Oil-Fix™ series products. These silicas are designed to act as thickening/gelling agents in oils and silicones, allowing you to transform oils into a powder-like or gel texture.
Suitable Products:
- Oil-Fix™ S (Silicone Gelling, Silica Dimethyl Silylate): This silica effectively creates a network around oil molecules, providing excellent oil encapsulation. It results in a dry, non-greasy feel and a matte finish, making it ideal for converting oils into powder-like or gel textures.
- Oil-Fix™ Eco (Silicone/Oil/Water Gelling, Silica): This silica also functions as a thickening/gelling agent in oils, silicones, and water. It is suitable for formulations that require thickening of oil or silicone to suspend particles.
Method for Encapsulating Oil with Silica into Powder Form:
- Select Silica: Choose either Oil-Fix™ S or Oil-Fix™ Eco based on your formulation needs and the type of oil you are using.
- Mixing: Gradually add the silica powder (Oil-Fix™ S or Oil-Fix™ Eco) into the oil you wish to encapsulate.
- Dispersion: Stir or blend thoroughly to ensure the silica powder is well-dispersed and integrated with the oil. The silica will begin to absorb the oil and form a gel structure.
- Texture Adjustment: Adjust the usage rate of the silica (typically 0.5-10%) to achieve the desired powder or gel texture. Higher concentrations (above 1.5%) will result in a drier, less greasy feel.
Important Notes:
- Oily nano silica dispersion is not suitable for directly converting oil into a powder, as it is a liquid dispersion, not a powder-forming agent.
- Mesostructured silica microspheres are primarily used for controlled release of active ingredients and are not designed to directly transform oils into a powder form like the Oil-Fix™ series.
