The Use of Mineral Oil in Face Wash Products

Mineral oil is used in some face wash products primarily due to its high stability and long shelf life compared to natural oils. Its main function in a face wash is to help dissolve oil-soluble impurities, such as makeup, which water alone cannot effectively remove. Using mineral oil helps to clean pores more thoroughly, especially when removing makeup.

Regarding skin types, mineral oil is suitable for removing makeup on all skin types. However, individuals prone to acne may need to be more cautious, although in a wash-off product like a face wash with short contact time, the risk of pore-clogging is generally lower than with leave-on products.

Today, alternative ingredients are available that can perform similar functions. For example, MakeUp-Wash™ (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides) is an ingredient that acts as both an oil-dissolving agent and a surfactant. When mixed with water, it forms micellar structures, which are small particles that can penetrate pores to effectively lift and remove dirt and makeup.
