Mixing Aloe Vera Gel Base, Wakame Extract, and Rose Hip Oil for Skin Cream

Question

I want to mix ready-made bases like Aloe Vera Gel Base and Wakame Extract (Brown Sea Weed) together. The instructions for Wakame Extract say to mix it into the water phase or add it in the final step and blend until completely dispersed, avoiding heat above 40°C.

Can I mix these two together and apply it to the skin as a skin cream?

Also, can I add natural oils like Rose Hip Oil and other oil-soluble skin nourishing ingredients to this mixture? I would use the amounts recommended for each product.

How should I mix them correctly? Please advise.

Answer

Mixing Aloe Vera Gel Base, Wakame Extract, and Rose Hip Oil

Thank you for your question about mixing these ingredients to create a skin cream.

You can easily mix the Wakame Extract (Brown Sea Weed) into the Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) base. Wakame Extract is water-soluble and can be added directly to the gel base. Stir until it is completely dispersed. Remember to avoid heating the mixture above 40°C, as recommended for the Wakame Extract.

However, mixing the Rose Hip Oil (Extra Virgin) directly into the Aloe Vera Gel base will not create a stable cream. The Aloe Vera Gel base is water-based and oil-free. Oil and water do not mix without an emulsifier (a substance that helps oil and water combine). Simply stirring them together will likely result in the oil separating from the gel over time.

To create a stable cream that incorporates both the gel base and the oil, you would need to use an appropriate emulsifier. Similarly, adding other oil-soluble ingredients to this mixture would also require an emulsifier to prevent separation.

Therefore, while you can mix the Wakame Extract into the Aloe Vera Gel base, you cannot simply mix the Rose Hip Oil into this gel to get a stable cream. You could use the Rose Hip Oil separately, or formulate a cream using an emulsifier to combine the water and oil phases.

Always adhere to the recommended usage rates for each ingredient when formulating.
