Question

When adding ingredients to a formulation, should they be added before or after each other:

  • essential oil
  • panthenol?

Answer

When customizing the Absolue Soft Cream Base (compare to Lancome) with Panthenol and Essential Oils, the following order of addition is recommended:

Recommended Mixing Order

  1. Add Panthenol First:
    • Panthenol is a water-soluble active ingredient. It should be incorporated into the cream base first to ensure it is fully dissolved and evenly distributed.
    • If you are using Panthenol (Vitamin B5, DL-Panthenol, Powder), it is best to dissolve it in a very small amount of water before adding it to the base to prevent any graininess.
    • If you are using D-Panthenol Care (Pro-Vitamin B5, 100% Liquid), you can add it directly to the base and stir well.
  2. Add Essential Oil Last:
    • Essential oils are volatile substances. Adding them as the final step (the "cool-down" or final mixing phase) helps preserve their aromatic properties and prevents them from evaporating during the mixing process.
    • Stir gently but thoroughly until the oil is completely incorporated into the cream.

Usage Guidelines

  • Panthenol: Recommended at 1-3%. Using more than 5% may make the final cream feel sticky on the skin.
  • Essential Oils: Generally added at 0.1-1% depending on the desired scent strength and the specific oil's safety profile for skin application.
  • Mixing: Always ensure the mixture is homogeneous (uniform in texture and color) after each addition before moving to the next ingredient.
