Question
Regarding Shea Butter (Ultra Soft), is it necessary to use heat for mixing with other ingredients? Is it possible to mix at room temperature? Also, are Bisabolol and Calendula Extract compatible with Shea Butter?
Answer
Mixing Shea Butter (Ultra Soft)
Regarding mixing Shea Butter (Ultra Soft) with other ingredients:
- Mixing Method: While Shea Butter (Ultra Soft) is a soft cream at room temperature, the standard method for incorporating it into the oil phase of a formulation is by heating it to 60-70°C until it melts into a liquid oil. This allows for easier and more uniform mixing with other oil-soluble ingredients.
- Mixing at Room Temperature: Mixing at room temperature is possible, but because it is in a cream form, it can be difficult to blend thoroughly with other oils unless you use a high-shear mixer or blender.
Compatibility with Bisabolol and Calendula Extract
- Bisabolol: Bisabolol is oil-soluble, so it mixes well with Shea Butter. You can add Bisabolol to the melted Shea Butter during the oil phase.
- Calendula Extract: Calendula Extract is typically water-soluble. A water-soluble extract will not mix directly with Shea Butter (which is an oil/fat) without the use of an emulsifier to create an emulsion (like a cream or lotion). There is also an oil-soluble form called Calendula Oil (Infused), which would mix directly with Shea Butter.
