Mixing SPF Ingredients into Finished Lotion

Mixing SPF ingredients into a finished store-bought lotion is generally not recommended. While ingredients like SPF Protect Ultra II and SPF Protect Ultra III are suitable for creating sunscreen formulations, simply adding them to an existing lotion can lead to several problems:

• Uneven Dispersion: Sunscreen filters need to be evenly distributed throughout the product to provide consistent protection. Mixing into a finished lotion often results in poor dispersion, leading to patchy protection on the skin.
• Stability Issues: The existing lotion formula may not be compatible with the added sunscreen ingredients, potentially causing the product to separate, change texture, or lose its effectiveness over time.
• Reduced Efficacy: The SPF and PA values are determined by the specific concentration and dispersion of sunscreen filters within a stable formula. Adding filters to a finished product will likely not achieve the intended protection level and could even degrade the filters.

For reliable and effective sun protection, it is best to use a lotion that is already formulated with SPF or to create a sunscreen lotion from scratch using appropriate base ingredients and sunscreen filters like SPF Protect Ultra II or SPF Protect Ultra III.

SPF Protect Ultra II and SPF Protect Ultra III are liquid sunscreen blends that are easier to incorporate into formulations compared to powder forms, as mentioned in the previous reply. They are designed to provide high SPF and broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection when properly formulated into an emulsion (like a lotion).

• SPF Protect Ultra II: A viscous liquid blend providing high SPF/PA. It's oil-soluble and requires heating to 70-80°C for optimal incorporation into the oil phase of an emulsion.
• SPF Protect Ultra III (UVA+UVB): A light yellow oil blend offering high SPF and broad UVA/UVB protection. It is oil-soluble and easily mixed into the oil phase of a formula.

Both are suitable for body sunscreen formulations, but they should be used as part of a complete formulation process, not simply added to a finished product.
