Question

What natural extracts can be used to make a lip balm for skin lightening/whitening, and how should they be incorporated into the formulation, considering different types and their properties (solubility, heat tolerance)?

Answer

Natural Extracts for Whitening Lip Balm

For making a lip balm with natural extracts that help lighten skin tone, Licorice extract is a good option known for its whitening and anti-irritation properties.

There are two types of Licorice extract you can consider:

  • Pure-Glabridin™ Licorice Extract (Glabridin 90%): This is a highly concentrated form. It needs to be dissolved in Butylene Glycol or Ethanol before adding to your balm formula. It can tolerate heat up to 60°C, so add it during the cooling phase of your balm making, below 60°C, and ensure it is fully dissolved for effectiveness.
  • Licorice Extract (Glabridin 4.5%, Water-Soluble): This type is water-soluble and easier to dissolve directly in water. However, it is sensitive to heat. If your balm recipe involves heating, add this extract in the final step when the mixture is cooling down. Note that incorporating a water-soluble ingredient into an oil-based balm might require an emulsifier.

Both types of Licorice extract should be added when the balm mixture is cooling to preserve their efficacy, as natural extracts can be sensitive to high temperatures.
