Question
If I use the following as a base without adding any water, and package it in a pump bottle, can I omit preservatives from the cream formulation?
- Pitera
- Aloe Vera Gel
Answer
Even if you use Pitera or Aloe Vera Gel as a base without adding extra water, and package it in a pump bottle, it is generally not recommended to omit preservatives.
Here's why:
- Water Content: Both Pitera (Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate) and Aloe Vera Gel bases contain water as a primary component. Microbial growth requires water.
- Nutrient Source: Natural ingredients like ferments and plant extracts can serve as nutrients for bacteria, yeast, and mold.
- Contamination Risk: While a pump bottle reduces the risk of contamination during use compared to an open jar, contamination can still occur during manufacturing, filling, or from microorganisms present in the raw materials themselves.
- Safety and Stability: Preservatives are crucial for preventing the growth of harmful microorganisms that can spoil the product and pose a health risk to the user. They also help maintain the product's stability and shelf life.
Therefore, for any formulation containing water (which these bases do), adding an appropriate preservative system is necessary to ensure safety and product integrity.
