Question

Hello! I have a question I'm wondering about. Suppose I apply a serum that states it contains Niacinamide 5%, followed by a moisturizer that also contains Niacinamide 5%. Does that mean I have 5% or 10% Niacinamide on my face? Thank you!

Answer

Hello! That's a great question.

When a serum is labeled with 5% Niacinamide and a moisturizer is also labeled with 5% Niacinamide, the percentage refers to the concentration of Niacinamide within each individual product's formula.

Applying the serum followed by the moisturizer means you are applying Niacinamide from both products onto your skin. However, the percentages from different products do not simply add up linearly on your skin.

You are applying Niacinamide from two sources, each formulated at a 5% concentration within their respective products. The total amount of Niacinamide on your skin will be the sum of the amount from the serum and the amount from the moisturizer, but the concentration on your skin is not a straightforward 5% + 5% = 10%.

So, you do not end up with 10% Niacinamide on your face. You are applying Niacinamide from two products, each containing 5% of the ingredient within their own formulation.
