Answer
Nourishing and Brightening Lip Balm Formula
Dear Member,
Regarding your request for a lip balm with comprehensive properties including nourishing, reducing dry/chapped lips, reducing darkness, providing long-lasting moisture without stickiness or white cast/flakes, and usable as an overnight mask/primer, I recommend a formula using Water Balm™ as a base, as suggested by the staff, and adding ingredients to reduce darkness.
Lip Balm Formula (Adapted from Water Balm™ sample formula)
Part 1: Oil Phase
- Petroleum Jelly 56%
- Shea Butter 15%
- Beeswax (Natural) 10%
- Water Balm™ 5%
- Azela-Lip™ 1%
Part 2: Water Phase
- Glycerin 5%
- Water 4.9%
- Vitamin B3 (Safe-B3™) 1%
- Panthenol (Vitamin B5) 2%
- Phenoxyethanol SA 0.1%
Total: 100%
Key Ingredient Properties:
- Water Balm™: Helps emulsify the water phase into the oil base, allowing for higher inclusion of water-soluble active ingredients in the balm without separation.
- Petroleum Jelly, Shea Butter, Beeswax: Form the main balm structure, providing occlusion to retain moisture and reducing dryness/chapping. Shea Butter specifically helps nourish and soften the lips. Beeswax adds structure and barrier properties.
- Glycerin, Panthenol (Vitamin B5): Humectants that draw moisture into the lip skin, improving hydration and reducing dryness. Vitamin B5 also aids in skin repair.
- Azela-Lip™: A key ingredient specifically targeting lip darkness by affecting melanin production. Suitable for lip products.
- Vitamin B3 (Safe-B3™): Supports skin barrier function and offers mild brightening properties.
- Phenoxyethanol SA: Preservative to prevent microbial growth.
Instructions:
- Combine the oil phase ingredients (Petroleum Jelly, Shea Butter, Beeswax, Water Balm™) and heat to approximately 80°C, stirring until all ingredients are melted and combined.
- Combine the water phase ingredients (Glycerin, Water, Vitamin B3, Panthenol, Phenoxyethanol SA) and mix until clear.
- Slowly pour the water phase mixture into the hot oil phase (around 80°C) while stirring or blending rapidly until well combined.
- Turn off the heat and continue stirring or blending at low speed.
- When the mixture cools below 40°C, add Azela-Lip™ and stir or blend until fully dispersed.
- Continue stirring or blending until the mixture cools and begins to thicken. Pour into your containers and let it cool and set completely into a balm texture.
This formula will help nourish dry and chapped lips, provide long-lasting moisture, and help brighten dark lips. It can be used for daily care, as an overnight mask, or as a primer before applying colored lipstick.
