Question

I have an Oil Control Gel formula containing Distilled Water, Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3) 5%, Pure MSM™ 5%, Zinc PCA 1%, Licochalcone A 1%, Pro Polymer 2%, and Phenoxyethanol 0.8%. I want to improve its oil control for very oily skin.

How can I add Azelaic Acid, Vitamin B6, and Rice Vitamin to this formula? Also, what percentage of Matte Silica should I use?

Answer

Oil Control Gel Formula Improvement for Very Oily Skin

Regarding the Oil Control Gel formula you are currently using, which contains Distilled Water, Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3), Pure MSM™, Zinc PCA, Licochalcone A, Pro Polymer, and Phenoxyethanol, it is already a good formula with effective oil control ingredients at suitable percentages.

If you wish to further enhance oil control performance for very oily skin, you can consider adjusting the amounts of some ingredients in the original formula and adding new ingredients as suggested.

1. Adjusting Existing Ingredients and Adding New Ingredients

Based on your original formula, you can consider enhancing its effectiveness by:

  • Increasing Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide): Safe-B3™ helps reduce skin oiliness. You can increase the amount from 5% up to a maximum of 10% without causing Flushing like regular Niacinamide. The recommended usage rate is 1-10%.
  • Adding Azelaic Acid (Liquid Azelaic™): This ingredient effectively reduces oiliness, controls sebum production in pores, and helps with acne. The recommended usage rate for oil reduction is 5-10%.
  • Adding Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride): Vitamin B6 has oil control properties and helps tighten pores for oily skin. The recommended usage rate is 0.5-3.0%. Adding Vitamin B6 might slightly decrease the gel's viscosity as it is an electrolyte. You might need to consider slightly increasing Pro Polymer. Vitamin B6 also has a low pH (2-3) and is stable at pH 2-6, so you should check and adjust the final pH of the formula to be in the appropriate range (around 4.5-6.5) for optimal stability and skin compatibility.
  • Adding Rice Vitamin (Inositol, Vitamin B8): Helps balance skin moisture and normalize oiliness. The recommended usage rate is 1-3% (2% is recommended).

Example Guideline for Modifying the Formula (Adjust Water and Pro Polymer amounts as needed to reach 100% and achieve desired gel texture):

Here is an example of a modified formula with added ingredients to focus on enhanced oil control, based on your original formula and the suggested additions. You can adjust the amounts of the new ingredients within the recommended ranges:

  • Distilled Water: Adjust amount to reach 100% total
  • Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide): 5-10%
  • Pure MSM™ (Methylsulfonylmethane): 5% (Keep as is, as it already provides oil control and exfoliation at this amount)
  • Zinc PCA: 1% (Keep as is, as it is the maximum recommended amount for oily skin)
  • Licorice Extract (Licochalcone A 1%, Water-Soluble): 1% (Or may increase up to 3%, but be mindful that color and texture might change)
  • Pro Polymer (Gel Maker): 2-3% (May need to increase from the original 2% to compensate for potential thinning caused by Zinc PCA and Vitamin B6, which are electrolytes)
  • Phenoxyethanol (Safe Preservative): 0.8% (Keep as is)
  • Azelaic Acid (Liquid Azelaic™): 5-10%
  • Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride): 1-3%
  • Rice Vitamin (Inositol, Vitamin B8): 1-3% (2% is recommended)

Mixing Considerations:

  • Mix Vitamin B6 in the water phase, avoiding heat above 40°C and light. It is stable in the pH range of 2-6.
  • Mix Azelaic Acid in the final step, temperature not exceeding 40°C. It is stable in the pH range of 5-11.
  • After mixing all ingredients, you should check and adjust the final pH of the formula to be in the range of 4.5-6.5 for optimal efficacy and stability of various ingredients.

2. Amount of Matte Silica in the Formula

Matte Silica is an ingredient that helps absorb excess oil on the skin and provides an instant matte finish. It is particularly suitable for formulas for very oily skin.

  • Usage Rate: Matte Silica can be used at a concentration of 0.1-20% depending on the desired efficacy. For an Oil Control Gel for very oily skin that requires a matte finish and oil absorption, it is recommended to start with a concentration of 1-5% and can be increased if higher oil absorption and matte effect are desired.
  • Recommended Type: For maximum oil absorption, MatteSilica XL™ (such as MatteSilica 5XL™ or MatteSilica 10XL™) is recommended.
  • Mixing Method: Add Matte Silica in the final step by slowly sprinkling it into the gel and dispersing it evenly. Using Matte Silica may make the gel appear cloudy.

When modifying the formula, it is advisable to start with small test batches and evaluate the performance on your skin to find the most suitable amounts.
