Oil-Free Gel Makers and Aloe Vera Texture

Question

I want to create an oil-free gel formulation. I used Pro Polymer but found it had a strange smell and would like recommendations for alternative oil-free gel makers. I also want to know if Sugar Gel can be used to create an oil-free gel. Additionally, I'd like to know how to achieve a texture similar to aloe vera gel and if I can mix other active ingredients into ready-made aloe vera gel bases like Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) or Aloe Vera Gel (Lite).

Answer

Oil-Free Gel Makers and Aloe Vera Texture

Regarding your question about using Sugar Gel to create an oil-free gel, Sugar Gel is designed to create oil gels and is not suitable for oil-free formulations.

If you are looking for oil-free gel makers as an alternative to Pro Polymer, several options can provide a clear, non-oily gel texture:

  • Carbomer Ultrez 30: This creates a clear gel, is easy to use without heat, and is tolerant to electrolytes and a wide pH range (4-12). Use at 0.1-2%.
  • Sepimax Zen: Another option with high tolerance to salt and pH, used at 0.5-2%.
  • Xanthan Gum (clear gel type, smooth texture): A natural thickener that gives a clear, smooth gel without a stretchy feel. Use at 0.1-2% (1% recommended).
  • CarboQuick™: A pre-dispersed Carbomer gel that is very easy to use as it doesn't require dissolving powder or pH adjustment for gelation (works at pH 6-7). Use at 3-15%.
  • Poly-Protect (Hydrolyzed Sclerotium Gum): A natural polymer that creates a gel and provides a protective, hydrating film on the skin. Use at 0.5-2% (1-1.5% recommended).

To achieve a texture similar to aloe vera gel, you can use ready-made Aloe Vera Gel bases such as Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) or Aloe Vera Gel (Lite). These are oil-free water gels containing 30% Aloe Vera extract along with Vitamin B5 and Allantoin.

Regarding mixing other active ingredients into these Aloe Vera Gel bases:

  • Yes, you can mix other desired active substances into these bases. The product descriptions provide instructions for mixing both powdered and liquid actives.
  • These products are intended to be used as the primary base for your formulation, not as a small additive. You would typically use a high percentage of the Aloe Vera Gel base (e.g., 90-99%) and add your desired actives to it. The exact percentage depends on the total amount of other ingredients you wish to add.
