Question

I want to make a cold-pressed or natural body oil for very dry skin. I'm considering using Sweet Almond Oil as a base, adding Jojoba Oil and Rose Hip Oil. I would like to add sun protection. Which sunscreen ingredients can be mixed into oil?

Answer

Oil-Soluble Sunscreen Ingredients for Body Oil

Creating a body oil with cold-pressed or natural oils like Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Rose Hip Oil is a great idea for dry skin. To add sun protection to your oil blend, you will need oil-soluble sunscreen ingredients.

Here are some oil-soluble sunscreen ingredients that can be mixed into an oil base:

  • Octocrylene: Protects against UVB and UVA II rays. It is a liquid and mixes well with oils or silicones.
  • Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3): Blocks UVB and short-wave UVA. It is a powder that dissolves in oils.
  • Homosalate: Blocks UVB rays. It is a liquid that mixes in oil and can also help dissolve other powder sunscreens.
  • BEMT (Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine): A highly stable organic sunscreen that protects against a wide range of UVA/UVB. It is a powder that dissolves in oil.
  • Enzacamene (4-methylbenzylidene camphor): An oil-soluble UVB sunscreen.
  • SPF Protect Ultra™ III: A blend of sunscreens designed to provide high SPF and broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, easily mixed into oil.

Additionally, LipidSoft™ SPF is an emollient ester that can help dissolve chemical sunscreens in oil formulas and reduce stickiness.

When formulating, ensure the chosen sunscreen ingredients are fully dissolved in the oil base. The concentration of the sunscreen ingredient will determine the level of SPF and PA protection. Always refer to the recommended usage rates for each ingredient to ensure effectiveness and compliance with regulations.
