Perfume Formulation: Mixing Oil, Alcohol, and Powdery Scents

Question

I want to try mixing fragrance, but I don't have knowledge in this area. I'd like to ask if it's possible to use both Fractionated Coconut Oil and Alcohol by using Fractionated Coconut Oil as a carrier oil for Fragrance and Essential Oils (I learned from old posts that they can be mixed directly without any oil, but I want to use oil to reduce the amount of Alcohol) and then mix it with Alcohol. Is this method possible?

Also, I would like to ask for recommendations for a Fragrance that has a soft, powdery scent. Are there any recommended scents or ingredients?

Answer

Perfume Mixing Method

It is generally not recommended to mix fragrance or essential oils with Fractionated Coconut Oil and then add alcohol to create a standard alcohol-based perfume.

  • Alcohol and oil do not mix well without a proper solubilizer, and adding a carrier oil like Fractionated Coconut Oil before the alcohol will prevent the fragrance oils from dissolving correctly in the alcohol base. This can result in a cloudy mixture or separation.
  • For alcohol-based perfumes, fragrance/essential oils are typically dissolved directly into high-proof perfumer's alcohol.
  • If you wish to use Fractionated Coconut Oil, you could create an oil-based perfume (like a roll-on) where the fragrance oils are diluted in the Fractionated Coconut Oil.
  • If you want an alcohol-based spray perfume, stick to dissolving the fragrance oils directly in the alcohol.

Powdery Scent Recommendations

To achieve a soft, powdery fragrance, look for ingredients known for these notes. Based on typical perfumery notes and the search results, consider the following:

  • Orris/Iris: Ingredients like Orris Root Concrete Butter are classic for a sophisticated, powdery, slightly rooty scent.
  • Musk: Certain musk notes, such as those found in Pure Musc, contribute a clean, soft, powdery feel.
  • Violet: Violet notes, like Violet Flower, Violet Leaf, or Violet Leaf Absolute, can provide a delicate, powdery, sometimes slightly green or floral powderiness. Violet Base is also designed for fragrance development with a violet profile.
  • Other Soft/Sweet Notes: Notes like Almond Milk, Fat Milk, or Sweet Vanilla can add to a soft, comforting, and sometimes powdery impression, especially when blended with other powdery elements.

Experimenting with small amounts of these types of ingredients can help you create your desired powdery scent profile.

Update as of 2026-05-24

The previous guidance remains correct, with these clarifications:

  • For a normal clear alcohol perfume, dissolve the fragrance concentrate and essential oils directly into perfumer’s alcohol, such as Ethyl Alcohol 96% Perfumer Grade or Ethyl Alcohol 99.9% 200 Proof. Do not first dilute them in Fractionated Coconut Oil and then add alcohol, because Fractionated Coconut Oil is Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, an oil-phase carrier, and can cause haze, oily droplets, or separation in an alcohol perfume.
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil is suitable for an oil perfume or roll-on perfume. In that case, dissolve the fragrance/essential oil blend into the oil carrier and do not add alcohol.
  • If the goal is a lower-alcohol or alcohol-free spray, treat it as a separate solubilized spray formula. Flora Solve™ Clear can be tested by premixing it with the fragrance phase first, then adding it into the main formula, but the result is not the same as a classic alcohol perfume and must be checked for clarity, sprayability, skin feel, and scent performance.
  • For a soft powdery scent direction, current catalog options include orris/iris, violet, and ionone-style materials such as Violet Leaf Absolute, Violet Methyl Carbonate, Alpha-ionone, Beta-ionone, Methyl Ionone Gamma, Orris Hexanone, and Iris pallida rhizome tincture. These can be combined with soft vanilla, almond/milky notes, and a compliant clean musk accord.
  • For all fragrance concentrates, aroma chemicals, and essential oils, check the current safety/allergen/use-limit information for the exact material and final product type before high-level use or sale. Avoid casually using old-style nitro musks as beginner powdery musk materials without a full safety and regulatory review.
