Question

I tried mixing Citromask 1% with LipidSoft Dry 15% and Shea Butter Light Oil 5% in the oil phase, and then mixed this into the water phase of the formula. After finishing the mixing, the odor is still present and hasn't significantly reduced. Does the odor normally disappear completely? Please advise.

Answer

Addressing Odor in Your Formulation

It sounds like you've created a formulation using Citromask, LipidSoft Dry, and Shea Butter Light Oil. It's understandable that you're concerned about the persistent odor after mixing.

Citromask is designed to help mask or neutralize unwanted odors in a formulation. However, whether the odor completely disappears depends on several factors:

  • Strength of the Original Odor: Some raw materials, including certain oils or esters like LipidSoft Dry or Shea Butter Light Oil, can have their own natural odors. If the original odor is very strong, a higher concentration of masking agent might be needed, or complete elimination might not be possible.
  • Concentration of Citromask: The 1% concentration you used might not be sufficient to mask the specific odor present in your other ingredients or the combination of them. You might need to check the recommended usage rate for Citromask and consider increasing the concentration if appropriate and within recommended limits.
  • Type of Odor: Odor masking agents work by either covering up the scent or chemically reacting with the odor molecules. Citromask might be more effective on certain types of odors than others.
  • Compatibility: Ensure that Citromask is compatible with all other ingredients in your formulation and that its effectiveness is not reduced by other components.

Recommendations:

  1. Check Usage Rate: Refer to the recommended usage rate for Citromask to ensure you are using an appropriate amount.
  2. Increase Concentration (if applicable): If the recommended range allows, you could try increasing the concentration of Citromask gradually to see if it improves the odor masking.
  3. Consider Alternative Masking Agents: If increasing the concentration of Citromask doesn't work, you might explore other odor masking agents that could be more effective against the specific type of odor you are experiencing.
  4. Ingredient Quality: The intensity of natural odors in ingredients like Shea Butter Light Oil can sometimes vary depending on the processing and quality. Ensure you are using high-quality ingredients.

It is not always guaranteed that an odor will completely disappear, especially if the base ingredients have a noticeable scent. The goal of a masking agent is often to reduce the odor to an acceptable level rather than eliminate it entirely.
