pH Adjustment for Anti-Aging Serum Formulation
Question
I am 32 years old with very dry skin, medium large pores, and starting wrinkles between my eyebrows and laugh lines. I am very keen to address the wrinkles. Could you please review my formulation?
My formulation is:
- double hyaluron base 120 g.
- bio yeast essence 1 g.
- Tego® Pep 4-17 5 g.
- gotu kola 5 g.
- sea kelp 10 g.
I would like to know if I need to adjust the pH further (I actually think I don't need to, but want to confirm). I want the pH to be good for the skin and not destroy the efficacy of the active ingredients. Please advise.
Answer
pH Adjustment for Your Anti-Aging Serum
Regarding your formulation for addressing dry skin, enlarged pores, and wrinkles, which includes double hyaluron base, bio yeast essence, Tego® Pep 4-17, gotu kola, and sea kelp, you are correct to consider the pH.
While the ingredients you are using are generally compatible within a certain pH range, it is crucial to measure the final pH of your finished formulation after all ingredients have been added and mixed thoroughly.
- Optimal Skin pH: Healthy skin has a slightly acidic pH, typically between 4.7 and 5.7. Formulations within this range or slightly higher (up to 6.5) are generally well-tolerated and help support the skin barrier function.
- Ingredient Stability: Different active ingredients have specific pH ranges where they are most stable and effective. For example, Yeast Radiance™ (similar to bio yeast essence) works best in a pH range of 4.0-6.5. Peptides like Pep®-PP4 (similar to Tego® Pep 4-17) are generally stable in slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
To ensure the best performance of your active ingredients and to be gentle on your skin, it is highly recommended to adjust the pH of your final formulation to be within the range of 4.0 to 6.5 if it falls outside this range. You can use a dilute acid (like citric acid solution) to lower the pH or a dilute base (like sodium hydroxide solution) to raise it, adding drop by drop and measuring with a pH meter or pH strips until the desired range is achieved.
Measuring and adjusting the pH is a critical step to maximize the benefits of your serum and minimize potential irritation.
