Question
I am formulating a cream using Light Cream Maker, B3 (Niacinamide), and NAG (N-Acetyl Glucosamine).
- I understand that B3 and NAG are around pH 7. If I use both, will the pH increase? I read in a previous formula example from your website using Light Cream Maker that the final pH was slightly acidic. Why is this the case?
- If the resulting pH is slightly acidic, can I add Soy Extract, Green Tea Extract, and Licorice Extract? Will this addition affect the stability of B3 and NAG?
- Regarding Perfect-C (Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate) and B3 (Niacinamide): Is it only not recommended to combine them in the same formula, or should they also be applied separately with a time gap?
Answer
Based on the staff's reply:
- Regarding the pH of B3, NAG, and Light Cream Maker: These ingredients are neutral to slightly alkaline, typically in the pH 7-8 range. A formula containing just these would likely have a pH in this range, not slightly acidic. Adding slightly acidic ingredients like Disodium EDTA helps lower the pH to be more suitable for skin (below 7).
- Adding Soy Extract, Green Tea Extract, and Licorice: It is appropriate and possible to add these extracts to your formula. They will not negatively affect the stability of B3 and NAG. Most ingredients are stable in a pH range of approximately 4.5-7.
- Your proposed formulation: The formulation you provided is feasible. The staff recommends mixing the preservative (Phenoxyethanol) with water first before adding it to the main mixture, especially if not using heat, as preservatives can sometimes thin the cream texture.
- Perfect-C and B3 usage: While it is not recommended to mix Perfect-C and B3 in the same formula, it is also advisable to apply them separately with a time gap, ideally at least 30 minutes, to ensure proper absorption of the first product.
