Preservative and Ingredient Safety for Lotion Formula
Question
Hello,
I want to add Nature Preserve™ at 1.5% to a skin lotion formula based on the list below.
- Is Nature Preserve™ safer than other preservatives? I need a very safe preservative with no side effects for use.
(I initially used Phenomip P4, but read that it contains parabens which may have side effects and potentially cause cancer, so I don't want to use Phenomip P4.) - Will adding Nature Preserve™ at approximately 1.5% protect against mold, yeast, and bacteria? If I want the lotion to have a shelf life of 2 years, is 1.5% sufficient?
- Is Nature Preserve™ approved for use by the Thai FDA? If so, what is the maximum percentage allowed?
- Does Nature Preserve™ have any dangers or side effects for the user?
- Can you recommend other preservatives that are safer than Nature Preserve™? (Approved by Thai FDA and international regulations?)
I need a very safe and effective preservative, I don't mind if it's a bit expensive, so I can feel confident when using the cream. - Are the ingredients used in the formula below safe for people? If I want to check if all the ingredients in my formula are approved by the Thai FDA, where can I check?
Face Cream Formula:
- Water: Remaining percentage
- Sweet Almond Oil: 5%
- Vitamin B5: 3%
- MOIST72: 3%
- WaterLock: 2%
- Repair Activator: 10%
- Light Cream Maker™: 1%
Thank you very much.
Answer
Preservative and Ingredient Safety in Your Lotion Formula
Regarding your questions about using NaturePreserve™ Ultra and the safety of the ingredients in your lotion formula:
NaturePreserve™ Ultra (Gluconolactone & Sodium Benzoate)
- Safety compared to other preservatives: NaturePreserve™ Ultra is a preservative of 100% natural origin. It does not contain parabens, addressing your concern about ingredients like Phenomip P4 that may contain them. It is licensed for use in major regions including the EU, USA, Japan, and Australia, indicating a good safety profile when used as recommended.
- Effectiveness at 1.5% and 2-year shelf life: Using NaturePreserve™ Ultra at 1.5% is within the recommended usage range (0.75-2.0%) and is suitable for a lotion, especially one in a jar which has higher exposure to microbes. At this concentration, it provides broad-spectrum protection against bacteria, fungi, and yeast. However, achieving a specific shelf life like 2 years for your finished lotion requires a challenge test on your complete formula. The effectiveness and stability depend on all ingredients, the manufacturing process, packaging, and storage conditions, not just the preservative and its percentage.
- Thai FDA approval and maximum percentage: NaturePreserve™ Ultra is licensed for use internationally, which generally aligns with regulatory standards in Thailand. The recommended maximum usage rate is 2.0%. You should always verify compliance with the latest Thai FDA regulations for your specific finished product before selling.
- Side effects: Based on its natural origin and global approval, NaturePreserve™ Ultra is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics within the recommended concentrations. Specific side effects are not commonly reported when used correctly.
Alternative Safe Preservatives
If you are looking for other safe and effective broad-spectrum preservatives, you might consider:
- NaturePreserve™ LB2: A natural origin preservative effective at low pH (2.0-6.5) with a usage rate of 0.5-1.0%.
- Global Guard™ 221: A globally approved, water-soluble broad-spectrum preservative effective at pH 2-7, used at 0.5-1.1%.
- Mild Preserved™ COS: A broad-spectrum, water-soluble, odorless preservative effective at a wide pH range of 2-8, used at 0.75-1.5%.
- Coco-Preserve™: A natural origin preservative from coconut extract, effective at pH 4-8, used at 0.8-1.5% in O/W emulsions.
Remember to check the pH compatibility and recommended usage rate for your specific formula when choosing a preservative. A challenge test is always necessary to confirm the effectiveness of any preservative in your final product.
Safety of Ingredients in Your Formula
The ingredients you listed in your formula are commonly used in cosmetic formulations and are generally considered safe for topical application within recommended concentrations:
- Purified Water
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Vitamin B5 (Panthenol)
- MOIST72™ (Saccharide Isomerate)
- WaterLock™ (Polyquaternium-51)
- Repair Activator™ BG (Bifida Ferment Lysate)
- Light Cream Maker™ (Sodium Polyacrylate (and) Polyisobutene (and) Water)
To check the official approval status of each ingredient and your complete formula with the Thai FDA, you would need to consult the official Thai FDA database or regulations directly. Using ingredients from reputable suppliers who adhere to international cosmetic standards is a good practice to ensure quality and safety, but final product compliance is your responsibility before distribution.
