Question

How much Global Guard™ should I use in my formula, considering that other ingredients like Lift-Now™, Repair Activator™, Double Hyaluron Liquid, and Global Guard™ itself already contain preservatives? I am concerned about the total concentration of preservatives in the final product.

Answer

Preservative Level in Your Formula

Based on the ingredients you are using:

  • Pro Polymer™ (Gel Maker): Does not contain added preservatives.
  • Lift-Now™: Contains Phenonip, Sodium Benzoate, and Potassium Sorbate.
  • Repair Activator™: Contains 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, and Tropolone.
  • Double Hyaluron Liquid: Contains Phenoxyethanol.
  • Global Guard™: Contains Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate.

Your concern about other ingredients contributing preservatives is valid. However, even with these contributions, using Global Guard™ at 0.5% results in a total estimated preservative concentration of about 0.7% in your final formula.

This total concentration is not excessively high. It is below the typical recommended usage range of 1.0-1.5% for Global Guard™ when used as the sole preservative and is well within the regulatory limits for use in cosmetics in Asia (maximum 1.96%).

The staff's suggestion to use Global Guard™ at around 0.8% (calculated based on the water content of your formula) would increase the total estimated preservative concentration to about 1.0%. This level falls within the recommended range for Global Guard™ and is likely to provide robust preservation for your product.

To be certain your formula is adequately preserved, it is always recommended to perform a challenge test on the final product, as recommended in the description for Global Guard™.
