Preservative Odor and Alternatives
Question
My preservative (likely Mild Preserved™) has a strong odor even when used at 0.5-1%. Is this concentration too high, or is this odor normal?
Are there alternative preservatives available that have little to no odor, such as Global Guard™?
Answer
Preservative Odor and Alternatives
It is normal for preservatives like Ethylhexylglycerin (found in Mild Preserved™) and Phenoxyethanol to have a characteristic odor. While they are effective at preserving formulations, their natural smell can become noticeable, especially when used at concentrations like 1%, which is within the typical usage range but can still contribute to the overall scent of your product.
If you are looking for a preservative with little to no odor, Global Guard™ is an excellent alternative. As suggested in the forum reply, Global Guard™ is known for being virtually odorless, making it a good choice for formulations where minimizing scent is important.
When using Global Guard™:
- Usage Rate: It is typically used at a concentration of 0.5% to 1.5%. Using 1.0% is recommended for general formulas, and up to 1.5% for products like cream jars that have repeated contact.
- pH Limitation: Global Guard™ is effective only in formulations with a pH less than 5.5. Ensure your formula's pH is within this range for the preservative to work correctly.
- Compatibility: Avoid using Global Guard™ in formulations containing any type of Vitamin C.
Choosing a preservative with a low odor like Global Guard™ can help you achieve a final product with a more neutral scent profile.
