Question

Seeking alternative broad-spectrum, water-soluble preservatives suitable for a hydrosol-based facial spray, other than Liquid Germall Plus.

Answer

For creating a facial spray using hydrosol, besides Liquid Germall Plus, there are several other broad-spectrum, water-soluble preservatives suitable for water-based formulas that you can consider.

Some interesting preservatives include:

  • Mild Preserved™ COS: This is a broad-spectrum, water-soluble, odorless preservative that can be used in a wide pH range (2-8). It is suitable for water-based formulas. Use at a rate of 0.75-1.5%. It can be mixed in at any stage where the temperature is below 45°C.
  • Global Guard™ 221: This is a water-soluble, broad-spectrum preservative that is globally approved. It has a suitable pH range (2-7) and is inexpensive. Use at a rate of 0.5-1.1%. It can be mixed in at any stage where the temperature is below 45°C.
  • Phenoxyethanol P5: This is a widely used, water-soluble preservative with a broad pH range (2-9). Use at a rate of 0.5-1.0% (not more than 0.5% for eye products). It can be mixed in at any stage where the temperature is below 80°C.

Additionally, Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Benzoate are water-soluble preservatives often used together for broader coverage. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on pH, working best in acidic conditions (generally pH 6 or lower). If your hydrosol or formula has a pH above 6, these might not be sufficient on their own.

Important Note:

  • Before commercial production, a Challenge Test should always be performed to confirm the effectiveness of the preservative in your specific formula.
