Question

How can I prevent rancidity (oxidation) in soap formulations that contain natural oils? What ingredients and percentages are recommended for this purpose, and are there any specific mixing instructions?

Answer

Preventing Rancidity in Soap with Natural Oils

To prevent rancidity (oxidation) in soap containing natural oils, using a combination of Natural Vitamin E (such as Natural Vitamin E Mixed Tocopherols) and Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (ROE) is highly effective.

  • Recommended Usage:
    • Natural Vitamin E Mixed Tocopherols: 0.1-0.2%
    • Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (ROE): 0.05%

Using these two ingredients together provides a synergistic effect, offering better protection against oxidation compared to using either ingredient alone.

Important Note: Both Natural Vitamin E and Rosemary Oleoresin Extract can be quite viscous. After adding them to your oil phase, ensure you mix or shake thoroughly to ensure they are evenly distributed throughout the oil.
