Pro Polymer Clumping and Storage Due to Moisture

Question

I am experiencing issues with Pro Polymer clumping and hardening due to moisture exposure, which results in small, undissolved particles in the final gel formulation.

Could you please provide guidance on:

  • Why does Pro Polymer clump and harden when exposed to moisture?
  • What are the best storage methods to prevent this issue?
  • Are there alternative gel-forming ingredients that are less susceptible to moisture?
  • What should I do if the Pro Polymer has already clumped to the point where it is unusable and I cannot achieve a smooth texture?

Answer

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the issues with your Pro Polymer clumping due to moisture.

Pro Polymer, like many other gel-forming ingredients, is highly hygroscopic. This means it readily absorbs moisture from the air, which causes the powder to clump and harden. This is a natural characteristic of the ingredient itself, as its function is to absorb water to create a gel texture.

Even when stored with a desiccant, if the packaging is not completely airtight, or if the surrounding environment is very humid, moisture can still penetrate and affect the product over time.

When the Pro Polymer clumps and hardens, grinding it down may not fully restore its original properties. The clumps might be partially hydrated or fused, preventing them from dispersing and hydrating evenly when mixed into your formulation. This is likely why you are seeing small, undissolved particles in your final gel.

To prevent this issue, the most effective storage method is to keep the Pro Polymer in a completely airtight container, such as a vacuum-sealable jar (like Super Lock or Lock n Lock), immediately after opening.

Regarding alternatives, most ingredients used for creating gel textures share similar hygroscopic properties and are also susceptible to clumping if exposed to moisture. Therefore, proper airtight storage is crucial for most gel makers.

If your Pro Polymer has clumped to the point where it is unusable and you are unable to achieve a smooth gel texture even after attempting to process it, please contact customer service at care@myskinrecipes.com. They are aware of this issue and may be able to assist you, potentially by arranging a replacement product.

Thank you.
