Product Storage Temperature, Shelf Life, and Oil Properties (Grape Seed, Rose Hip)

Question

I have a product that says to store it at 2-4°C. Is it okay to store it at room temperature instead? Will it spoil? What is the difference between spoilage and degradation? How quickly do ingredients degrade at room temperature or when exposed to heat/light?

Also, do grape seed extract oil and rose hip oil need to be refrigerated? And is grape seed extract oil primarily for acne?

Answer

Thank you for your kind feedback and for letting us know you received the order quickly! We're happy to hear you find the information helpful.

Regarding your questions about storage and ingredients, based on the staff's reply:

  • Storage at room temperature vs. 2-4°C: Products labeled for 2-4°C storage won't necessarily spoil if kept at room temperature, especially if they contain preservatives (they can last at least a year without spoilage). However, the lower temperature helps slow down the degradation of sensitive ingredients, maintaining their effectiveness for longer. Heat and light can accelerate this degradation. Storing in a cool place away from direct light is best for preserving quality.
  • Shelf life: With preservatives, products generally won't spoil for at least a year. The rate at which ingredients degrade varies depending on storage conditions (heat, light).
  • Grape seed oil and Rose hip oil storage: These are natural oils, and like most natural products, storing them in the refrigerator helps to slow down their degradation and maintain quality.
  • Grape seed oil and acne: Grape seed oil itself is considered non-comedogenic (doesn't clog pores). It can be useful for cleansing or removing makeup. However, using too much oil in a formulation applied to the skin might indirectly contribute to oiliness, which could potentially lead to acne for some individuals. It's not primarily described as an acne treatment but rather discussed in terms of its pore-clogging potential and cleansing use.
