Proper Temperature and Solubility for Gamma-Oryzanol
Question
I am a bit confused about the varying technical indications how to dissolve Gamma-Oryzanol. There are various temperatures stated while on sources outside of myskinrecipes.com I see 90 degrees Celsius and sometimes even higher than 120 degrees.
I stayed below 60 in a face oil settings (dispersing in MCT) and it took forever to get the Gamma-Oryzanol to dissolve.
Could you please clarify the correct temperature and if your product is different from other products and needs lower temperature? Thank you so much in advance! 🤗
Answer
The confusion regarding the dissolution temperature of Pure-Oryzanol™ (gamma Oryzanol 97%, Rice Bran Extract) often stems from the difference between its physical melting point and its solubility in various carrier oils.
1. Melting Point vs. Solubility
Technically, Gamma-Oryzanol has a high melting point, typically ranging between 135°C and 150°C. This is why some sources suggest very high temperatures (90°C–120°C+) to force it into a liquid state or to speed up dissolution in non-polar oils. However, in cosmetic formulation, heating oils to such high temperatures is generally avoided as it can cause oxidation and degradation of the carrier oils and other active ingredients.
2. The Role of Polarity
The solubility of Gamma-Oryzanol is highly dependent on the polarity of the solvent:
- MCT Oil: This is a medium-polarity oil. While it can dissolve Gamma-Oryzanol, it does so slowly and often requires higher heat or very long stirring times at 60°C.
- High Polar Esters: Gamma-Oryzanol dissolves much more efficiently in high-polarity solvents.
3. Why 60°C is Recommended
The recommendation to stay at 60°C is a safety guideline for the overall formulation. To achieve complete dissolution at this lower temperature, you need a high-polarity "coupling" solvent.
4. Recommended Solution
To dissolve Pure-Oryzanol™ effectively without exceeding 60°C, it is highly recommended to use LipidSoft™ Solve (Isopropyl Lauroyl Sarcosinate).
- LipidSoft™ Solve is a high-polar ester specifically designed to enhance the solubility of difficult-to-dissolve actives.
- It can dissolve Gamma-Oryzanol at concentrations of 10% or more, even at moderate temperatures.
Suggested Procedure:
- Mix Pure-Oryzanol™ with LipidSoft™ Solve (using a ratio of at least 1:5 or 1:10).
- Heat the mixture to approximately 60°C while stirring until the powder is completely clear and dissolved.
- Once dissolved, this "pre-mix" can be easily blended into your MCT oil or face oil base.
This method ensures the ingredient is fully active and stable without risking the integrity of your face oil through excessive heating.
