Question

When adding Pure-EGCG™ (Green Tea Extract, 98% EGCG) to a clear gel base, the gel turns dark brown. Is this caused by the EGCG? Does Pure-EGCG™ raw material change color or darken over time or with exposure to light and air?

Answer

Hello,

Thank you for your question regarding Pure-EGCG™.

Yes, it is possible for Pure-EGCG™ (Epigallocatechin Gallate), especially at high purity (98%), to cause the clear gel base to darken or turn brown over time, or upon exposure to light and air. This is a common characteristic of potent antioxidants like EGCG, which are susceptible to oxidation.

Why does this happen?

  • Oxidation: EGCG readily reacts with oxygen in the air. This oxidation process changes its chemical structure and typically results in a darker, brownish color.
  • Light Sensitivity: Exposure to light, particularly UV light, can accelerate the degradation and oxidation process.

How to Prevent Color Change:

  • Use an Antioxidant/Stabilizer: As suggested, adding ActiveProtec™ OX at a concentration of 0.5% to 1.0% to your formula is highly recommended. ActiveProtec™ OX is specifically designed to protect ingredients from oxidation and can significantly help prevent or minimize this color change.
  • Minimize Air Exposure: Ensure containers are well-sealed during production and storage.
  • Protect from Light: Use opaque or UV-protective packaging for the final product.
  • Control pH: Maintain the formula pH within the recommended range for EGCG stability (generally slightly acidic, check product guidelines if available, though Pure-EGCG™ description doesn't specify pH).
  • Storage: Store the raw material and final product in a cool, dark place as recommended.

By incorporating ActiveProtec™ OX and following proper handling procedures, you can significantly improve the color stability of your gel containing Pure-EGCG™.

Thank you.
