Question

I have several questions about formulating cosmetics.

First, can I use Cetyl Alcohol to create a cream texture?

Also, regarding the Aloe Vera Gel base:

  • Can it be used directly as is?
  • Can I add other extracts like Centella Asiatica or Green Tea?
  • Can I add Aloe Vera Extract to the base to increase its concentration?
  • Can extracts be used purely (undiluted) on the skin?
  • What is the shelf life of a mixture with water if no preservative is added?

Regarding the tester gel:

  • How is the price calculated when adding ingredients?
  • What is the final volume of the finished product after mixing?
  • What is the maximum percentage of additional ingredients recommended?

Finally, how can I create a gel formula with Aloe Vera, Centella Asiatica, Green Tea, and B5 using the base, specifically for combination skin with dry areas?

Answer

Answers to Your Formulation Questions

Here are the answers to your questions based on the information provided:

  • Using Aloe Vera Gel Base: The Aloe Vera Gel base can be used directly as is. You can also add other extracts, such as Centella Asiatica Extract or Green Tea Extract, to customize it. Adding a variety of nourishing ingredients in small amounts is generally more beneficial than using a single ingredient in a very high concentration.

  • Increasing Aloe Vera Concentration: You can add Aloe Vera Extract to the base gel to potentially increase the Aloe Vera concentration. Follow the standard mixing procedures for adding ingredients to the gel base.

  • Using Extracts Purely: Extracts should not be used purely (undiluted) on the skin.

  • Shelf Life Without Preservative: It is not possible to give a specific shelf life for a mixture with water without a preservative. It depends on many factors, especially the cleanliness of the mixing process. Without a preservative, the risk of microbial growth is high, and the product may spoil quickly.

  • Tester Gel Price and Volume: When adding ingredients to the tester gel, the price will be calculated automatically based on the added ingredients. The total volume of the finished product after mixing will always be 100g. It is recommended not to add more than 25% total additional ingredients to avoid affecting the texture and to better assess the effectiveness of each ingredient.

  • Custom Gel Formula (Aloe Vera, Centella Asiatica, Green Tea, B5): The Aloe Vera Gel base already contains Aloe Vera and Vitamin B5. For combination skin with dry areas, keeping Vitamin B5 in the formula is suitable for providing moisture to the dry parts. You can add Centella Asiatica Extract and Green Tea Extract to this base. However, specific formula proportions for custom mixtures are not provided. You may find example formulas in the formula section for guidance.

  • Using Cetyl Alcohol to Create Cream: Cetyl Alcohol cannot be used on its own to create a cream texture. It functions as a thickener and helps with texture but does not have the emulsifying properties needed to bind oil and water to form a cream. You would need a proper cream base or emulsifier (Cream Maker) to create a cream.
