Question
Which types of ceramides are suitable for use in a lip balm formulation?
Answer
For lip balm formulations, which are typically anhydrous (oil and wax-based), the most suitable ceramides are those that are oil-soluble or oil-dispersible. Here are the recommended options:
- Cerasoft™ (Synthetic Ceramide): This is highly recommended for lip balms and lipsticks. Beyond restoring the skin barrier, it provides gloss, improves pigment distribution, and stabilizes the solid structure of the balm. It helps prevent recrystallization, ensuring a smooth and consistent texture.
- Pseudoceramide (Cetylhydroxyproline Palmitamide): A very user-friendly synthetic ceramide with a low melting point. It dissolves easily into the oil phase of lip balms and offers excellent moisture retention and barrier support.
- Ceramide Complex (Water/Oil Dispersible Powder): A concentrated ceramide powder specifically designed to be dispersible in oil. It is ideal for high-performance formulations targeting severely dry or chapped lips.
- Ceramide 3 (Ceramide NP): A high-purity powder ceramide that excels at barrier repair. It requires heat (around seventy to eighty degrees Celsius) to dissolve properly into the oil phase of the formulation.
Additional Tip:
When making a traditional anhydrous lip balm, avoid using water-only dispersible ceramides, as they will be difficult to incorporate into the oil and wax base. Always ensure the ceramide you choose is compatible with the oil phase of your recipe.
