Question
Could you please provide a recommended formula for a skin tone evening lotion? I would like to include the following ingredients and need guidance on the correct amount of water and the mixing procedure, especially for heat-sensitive ingredients like MSH White and Urea:
Oil Phase:
- Butter Cream Maker
- Cetearyl Alcohol
- Other Oils
Water Phase:
- GlucoBright™
- Safe-B3™
- Natural PHA (Gluconolactone)
- Phenoxyethanol SA
- Water
Heat-Sensitive Phase:
- MSH White™
- Urea
Specifically, how much water should be used, and what is the correct mixing order for these ingredients to ensure stability and effectiveness?
Answer
Recommended Formula for Skin Tone Evening Lotion
This formula is designed to help even out skin tone using effective ingredients.
Oil Phase:
- Butter Cream Maker: 5%
- Cetearyl Alcohol: 5%
- Other Oils: 15%
Water Phase:
- GlucoBright™: 4%
- Safe-B3™: 5%
- Natural PHA (Gluconolactone): 1.5%
- Phenoxyethanol SA: 1%
- Water (Distilled): Remaining percentage (adjust to make total 100%)
Heat-Sensitive Phase (Add after cooling):
- MSH White™: 5%
- Urea: 5%
Mixing Instructions
Follow these steps carefully to create your lotion:
- Combine all ingredients listed under the Oil Phase in a container. Heat this mixture to 80°C while stirring until everything is fully melted and uniformly mixed.
- In a separate container, combine all ingredients listed under the Water Phase. Heat this mixture to a temperature close to the Oil Phase (around 80°C).
- Slowly pour the heated Water Phase into the heated Oil Phase. Stir or blend the mixture continuously until a stable cream texture begins to form.
- Allow the cream to cool down. Once the temperature drops below 50°C, add the ingredients from the Heat-Sensitive Phase (MSH White™ and Urea). Stir or blend thoroughly until these ingredients are completely incorporated into the cream.
- Continue stirring the mixture occasionally as it cools further to ensure the texture sets smoothly. Keep stirring until the temperature is below 40°C.
- Finally, leave the lotion at room temperature for approximately 24 hours to allow the texture to fully set and stabilize.
Addressing your questions:
- Regarding the amount of water needed: The staff's revised formula uses "Water (Distilled) Remaining percentage". This means you should calculate the total percentage of all other ingredients and subtract that from 100% to determine the correct amount of water. This ensures there is enough water to dissolve all the water-soluble components at their recommended percentages.
- Regarding the mixing order: Yes, the standard method is to prepare the oil and water phases separately, heat them, combine them to form the emulsion, and then add heat-sensitive ingredients after the mixture has cooled. The staff's instructions follow this principle, specifically recommending the addition of MSH White™ and Urea in the cooling phase. They also suggest using Butter Cream Maker and Cetearyl Alcohol as the primary emulsifiers in this revised formula instead of Soy Lecithin.
