Question

I am trying to make a reed diffuser using the following ratio: Fragrance 2 parts, Alcohol 1 part, and Reed Diffuser Base Type 1 5 parts. I pre-mixed the fragrance with alcohol before adding the base. However, I am experiencing separation. How can I prevent this?

Answer

Troubleshooting Reed Diffuser Separation

You are experiencing separation when mixing certain fragrances with Reed Diffuser Base (Type 1), even after pre-mixing the fragrance with alcohol. Your current ratio is Fragrance 2 parts, Alcohol 1 part, and Diffuser Base Type 1 5 parts.

The description for Reed Diffuser Base (Type 1) recommends using it at a ratio of approximately 70-75% in formulas, with fragrances in proportion of 25-30%.

Your current ratio translates to:

  • Fragrance: (2 / 8) * 100 = 25%
  • Alcohol: (1 / 8) * 100 = 12.5%
  • Diffuser Base: (5 / 8) * 100 = 62.5%

While your fragrance percentage is within the recommended range, the diffuser base percentage is lower than recommended.

To resolve the separation issue, please try the following:

  1. Adjust the Ratio: First, try adjusting the ratio to fit the recommended range of 25-30% fragrance and 70-75% Reed Diffuser Base (Type 1). For example, try a ratio of 2 parts fragrance to 6 parts Reed Diffuser Base (Type 1). This gives you 25% fragrance and 75% base, fitting the recommended range. Mix the fragrance directly with the base at this new ratio, without pre-mixing with alcohol initially, as the base is designed to dissolve the fragrance.

  2. If Separation Still Occurs: If separation still happens at the recommended ratio (25-30% fragrance, 70-75% base), then you can re-introduce the alcohol pre-mixing step. Try pre-mixing the fragrance with a small amount of alcohol (e.g., 1 part alcohol to 2 parts fragrance) and then add this mixture to the base, ensuring the overall formula still maintains approximately 25-30% fragrance and 70-75% base.

Some specific fragrance oils may be more difficult to dissolve than others and might require a higher percentage of the base or alcohol, or they might be less compatible with this specific type of base.
