Replacing Emulsifier with Aloe Vera Gel Base in Lotion Formula
Question
Based on the staff's original formula, can we replace Light Lotion Maker with the pre-made base Aloevera gel lite?
Original Formula:
- Light Lotion Maker: 4%
- Dimethicone 1Secs: 30%
- น้ำกลั่น ปราศจากเชื้อ: 59%
- Citromask™: 2%
- Farnesol: 2%
- Odor-Kill™ (ละลายน้ำ): 2%
- Mild Preserved Eco™: 1%
Proposed Formula:
- Aloevera gel lite: 53%
- Dimethicone 1 secs: 30%
- น้ำกลั่น ปราศจากเชื้อ: 10%
- Citromask: 2%
- Farnesol: 2%
- Odor-Kill: 2%
- Mild Preserved Eco: 1%
Mixing Steps:
- Mix 3+6+7 together (Water phase)
- Mix 1+2+4+5 together (Oil phase)
- Mix step 1 + step 2 together
Is this formula and mixing method feasible? Please advise.
Answer
Replacing Light Lotion Maker with Aloe Vera Gel (Lite) in your formula as proposed is not feasible for creating a stable product.
Here's why:
- Light Lotion Maker is an emulsifier. Its job is to bind oil-based ingredients (like Dimethicone, Citromask, and Farnesol) with water-based ingredients (like Purified Water, Odor-Kill, and Mild Preserved Eco) to form a stable mixture (an emulsion), such as a lotion or cream.
- Aloe Vera Gel (Lite) is a pre-made water-based gel. It is designed to be a base into which you can add other ingredients, primarily those that are water-soluble or can be dispersed within a gel structure. It does not act as an emulsifier and cannot effectively bind a large oil/silicone phase with a water phase.
Your original formula uses an emulsifier to create an emulsion. Your proposed formula replaces the emulsifier and most of the water with a gel base. When you try to mix the water phase (Purified Water, Odor-Kill, Mild Preserved Eco) with the mixture containing the gel base, silicone (Dimethicone), and oil-soluble ingredients (Citromask, Farnesol), the oil/silicone components will not stay mixed with the water-based gel. The formula will likely separate into layers.
The mixing steps you proposed are suitable for creating an emulsion (mixing a water phase and an oil phase), but they are not appropriate for incorporating a large oil/silicone phase into a water-based gel without an emulsifier.
If you wish to use Aloe Vera Gel (Lite), it is best used as a base for adding water-soluble active ingredients or small amounts of oil-soluble ingredients that can be properly dispersed or solubilized within the gel, rather than trying to use it to emulsify a significant oil phase.
